DPHSS Release No. 2017-062
4th Annual Guam Breastfeeding Awareness Month in August 2017(Update on Proclamation Signing is on Friday August 4, 2017)
The Department of Public Health and Social Services (DPHSS), the Breastfeeding Action Team of the Non-Communicable Disease Consortium and other community partners from Guam Memorial Hospital Authority, Guam Regional Medical City, Guam Community College, and the University of Guam, are pleased to announce August 2017 as “Guam Breastfeeding Awareness Month.” The 2017 theme is “Sustaining Breastfeeding Together.” The department aims to empower and support all women, working in both the private and public sectors in sustaining breastfeeding.
A proclamation signing is scheduled for Friday, August 4, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. at the Adelup Governor’s Conference Room. The 4th Annual Guam Breastfeeding Awareness Health Fair will be held at the Micronesia Mall Center Court on Saturday, August 26, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Breastfeeding information, raffle prizes, health screening, and educational table top exhibits from various community service providers will be featured. In addition, the health fair aims to increase the awareness of the Guam Public Law 32-098 known as the Nana Yan Patgon Act that helps working mothers sustain their breastmilk supply while at work. It protects a woman’s right to breastfeed in private or public establishments and recognizes breastfeeding in public as a normal and natural way to feed infants.
Additionally, radio interviews, public service announcements, and other activities are scheduled throughout the month. For more information concerning these events, please contact Barbara Mafnas, RN and Breastfeeding Action Team Leader at 777-6526 or Diana Santos, Breastfeeding Action Team Member at 735-7356.
