DPHSS Release No. 2015-088
December 1 is World AIDS Day
The Department of Public Health and Social Services STD/HIV Program, in partnership with WestCare Pacific Islands (WCPI), Guam’s Alternative Lifestyle Association (GALA), and the Guam HIV Planning Group (HPG), is pleased to announce the observance of World AIDS Day on December 1, 2015.
World AIDS Day is celebrated annually on December 1 to raise awareness about the global impact of HIV/AIDS and to recommit ourselves toward achieving and AIDS-free generation. The 2015 federal theme for World AIDS Day is “The Time to Act is Now” and demonstrates the urgent need of action today in order for us to achieve an AIDS-free generation in the future.
Globally, there are approximately 36.9 million people living with HIV. In the United States, there are approximately 1.2 million Americans living with HIV, and almost 1 in 8 are unaware of their infection; an estimated 50,000 new HIV infections occur each year in the United States. In Guam, there have been 253 cases of HIV infection reported since 1985, and there are approximately 67 people known to be living with HIV. HIV continues to be a global public health issue and requires a coordinated and united response. Thus, it is important for us to come together to take action by raising awareness about the global HIV epidemic.
To commemorate World AIDS Day 2015, the following events are scheduled:
November 29 – World AIDS Day Expo, Agana Shopping Center, Center Court, 10am – 3pm
December 1 – World AIDS Day Wave and Candlelight Vigil, WestCare Pacific Islands Office in Tamuning, 5pm – 7pm.
