For Immediate Release November 26, 2014; 11:30 am DPHSS Release No. 2014-088 The Department of Public Health and Social Services STD/HIV Program, Bureau of Communicable Disease Control in collaboration with WestCare Pacific Islands (WCPI), Guam’s Alternative Lifestyle Association (GALA), and the Guam HIV Planning Group (HPG), is pleased to announce observance of 2014 World AIDS Day. World AIDS Day is held on December 1 each year and is an opportunity for people to unite in the fight against HIV, show support for people living with HIV, and to commemorate those who have passed. The 2014 theme for World AIDS Day is “Focus, Partner, Achieve: An AIDS-free Generation.” HIVAIDS are a top health concern in the United States, with almost 1.2 million Americans living with HIV infection and an estimated 50,000 new HIV infections occurring each year. In Guam, there have been 252 cases of HIV infection reported since 1985, and there are approximately 65 people currently known to be living with HIV. To commemorate World AIDS Day, the following events are scheduled and open to the public: November 26 – Proclamation Signing, Governor’s Conference Room, Adelup, 10am November 29 – World AIDS Day Mass, 7pm at St. Anthony’s Church in Tamuning; following the mass, light refreshments will be served at WCPI Office located on the 3rd floor of the Core Pacific Building in Tamuning (above Hornet Sports); November 30 – World AIDS Day Exhibit, 10am-3pm at the center court of Agana Shopping Center; December 1 – World AIDS Day Wave & Candlelight Vigil, 5pm-7pm at the GALA Office located at the Dos Amantes Plaza in Upper Tumon (between Bank of Hawaii and Wendy’s).
