June 27th is National HIV Testing Day

The Department of Public Health and Social Services STD/HIV Program is pleased to announce that June 27 is National HIV Testing Day (NHTD). NHTD was first observed on June 27, 1995 and was established as an annual observance to encourage people of all ages to take an HIV test. The theme for NHTD is Take the Test, Take Control.

In Guam, 247 HIV cases have been reported to the Department of Public Health and Social Services (DPHSS) since 1985. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 1.1 million people in the U.S. are living with HIV and nearly one in six of them are not aware that they are infected with HIV.

HIV testing is a critical first step in taking control and responsibility over your health. If you test positive for HIV, medical care and treatment services are available and are also crucial for you to live a longer and healthier life.

The STD/HIV Program, in collaboration with WestCare Pacific Islands/GUAHAN Project and Guam’s Alternative Lifestyle Association (GALA) will be providing free HIV rapid tests (HIV test results available in 20 minutes) at the following locations on June 27, 2014 (Friday):

8:00am to 5:00pm – DPHSS facility in Mangilao, Room 156 (1st floor):

9:00am to 9:00pm – WestCare Pacific Islands/GUAHAN Project Office, Suite 301 (3rd floor above Hornet at the Core Pacific Building in Tamuning across from Tamuning Elementary School):
