DPHSS Release No. 2013-034A

National Asian and Pacific Islander HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

The Department of Public Health and Social Services (DPHSS) is pleased to announce that  May 19, 2013, is National Asian and Pacific Islander HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.  The DPHSS encourages all community leaders, health advisors and policymakers to raise awareness about the impact of HIV/AIDS-related stigma among our island community.

In Guam, over 244 HIV/AIDS cases have been reported to the DPHSS since 1985.  It is estimated that 1 in 3 Asians and Pacific Islanders living with HIV do not know it.  Therefore, HIV testing is a critical first step in taking control and responsibility
over your health.

In commemoration of National Asian and Pacific Islander HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, the DPHSS in collaboration with Guam’s Alternative Lifestyle Association (GALA), GUAHAN Project/WestCare Pacific Islands (WCPI), Bank of Guam, and 76/Circle K announces the following events:

•        Wednesday, May 15, 2p.m.- 5p.m. and 7p.m.- 9p.m. – GALA Open House and screening of the Banyan Tree Project's "Taking Root" stories from Guam

•        Thursday, May 16, 3p.m.- 6p.m. – GUAHAN Project/WCPI Open House and screening of the Banyan Tree Project's "Taking Root" stories

•        Friday, May 17, from 4p.m.- 6p.m. – Wave for Awareness at the ITC Intersection in Tamuning
