DPHSS Release No. 2013-047
The Department of Public Health and Social Services (DPHSS), STD/HIV Program is pleased to announce that June 27th is National HIV Testing Day (NHTD). First observed on June 27, 1995, NHTD was established as an annual observance to promote HIV testing.
In Guam, 244 HIV cases have been reported to DPHSS since 1985. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 1.1 million people in the U.S. are living with HIV and nearly one in five of them are not aware that they are infected with HIV.
The theme for NHTD is Take the Test, Take Control. HIV testing is a critical first step in taking control and responsibility over your health. If you test positive for HIV, care and treatment services are available.
The STD/HIV Program, in collaboration with WestCare Pacific Islands/GUAHAN Project and Guam’s Alternative Lifestyle Association (GALA) will be providing free HIV rapid testing services (test results available in 20 minutes) at the following locations on June 27, 2013 (Thursday):
8:00am – 5:00pm at the DPHSS facility in Mangilao, Room 127 (1st floor)
9:00am – 9:00pm at the WestCare Pacific Islands/GUAHAN Project Office at the Core Pacific Building in Tamuning (Hornet Building across from Tamuning Elementary School), Suite 301 (3rd floor)
For information about NHTD or the STD/HIV Program’s Services, please contact the Guam AIDS Hotline at 734-2437 (AIDS) or visit our new website: www.prutehihao.guam.gov .
