Nutrition Pledge Signing Ceremony
The Department of Public Health and Social Services (DPHSS) in collaboration with the Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) Consortium invites the community to witness the Nutrition Pledge Signing Ceremony on Wednesday, July 29, 2015, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., at the Governor’s Complex’s, Large Conference room. This is a First on Guam.
High salt intake is attributed to the high incidence of chronic diseases such as Hypertension, Cardiovascular Disease, Stroke, Cancer, etc. in our community. Cardiovascular disease and stroke remain as the top ten leading causes of death in Guam. Because of this, several members of the Guam Hotel & Restaurant Association and the Micronesian Chef Association have joined the campaign to implement the Salt Reduction Initiative by signing a Pledge for the “Removal of Salt Shakers and other salt products (soy sauce, fish sauce, finedene and other salt products) at the dining table and making them available upon customer’s request only. The World Health Organization recommends 5 grams or 1 teaspoon of salt intake a day.
Local restaurants and other food establishments are highly encouraged to support and join the Nutrition Pledge Signing Ceremony to implement the Salt Reduction Initiative. For more information, please call the Bureau of Community Health Services at 735-7336.
