PRESS RELEASE NO:2019-025

PARTIAL FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN IMPACT ON THE SUPPLEMENTAL NUTRITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM and WOMEN, INFANTS and CHILDREN (WIC) – LATEST UPDATE

The Director of the Department of Public Health and Social Services would like to inform the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP-formerly known as Food Stamp Program) and the Woman, Infants and Children (WIC) Program recipients regarding the latest press release from United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The Press Release dated January 8, 2019 stated that to protect SNAP participants’ access for February, USDA is working with states to issue February benefits earlier than usual. USDA will be reaching out to states to instruct them to request early issuance of SNAP benefits for February.  States will have until January 20th to request and implement the early issuance.  Once the early issuances are made, the February benefits will be made available to SNAP participants at that time.

In light of the USDA press release, Bureau of Economic Security is working on processing all February 2019 renewal applications on or before January 20, 2019 for early issuance of February benefits.

Additionally, USDA has also ensured the other major nutrition assistance programs have sufficient funding to continue operations into February, such as Women, Infants and Children (WIC).

Should you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Annie Soto of the Bureau of Economic Security at 735-7432 and/or David Gumataotao of WIC at 475-0295 or 475-0296.
